2025年4月発売：『Practical English Phonetics and Phonology Fifth Edition』(Routledge)

2025年4月発売に Paul Carley, Inger M. Mees and Beverley Collins 著『Practical English Phonetics and Phonology Fifth Edition』(Routledge) がリリースされました📖 4版は以前から何度も紹介してますが個人的にかなりお気に入りだったのでこの5版も楽しみにしてました。

アメリカ英語発音での無声化について①

今回の記事では5版の無声化（devoicing）についての気になった記述を紹介します。本サイトでは /l/ の発音を扱うことが多く最近もいくつか /l/ の話をしたので、今回は /l/ の無声化（devoicing）の記述を見てみます。

5版 P.33では、clean, play, click, clock, please, plaster, plenty, clusterなどの語において

アメリカ英語発音では /l/ が暗く、little or no devoicing

とありました。

We have already mentioned that English /l/ has a very common fricative allophone which is to be heard in words beginning /pl/ and /kl/. If a normally voiced phoneme is for whatever reason realised partially or fully without voice, the effect is termed devoicing. As we have seen, this is shown by a diacritic in the form of a little circle, e.g. [l̥].

Try saying these words with devoiced [l̥] as in GB: clean, play, click, clock, please, plaster, plenty, cluster. In GA the /l/ in this context is dark and there is little or no devoicing.

同じく、5版 P.51では、clean, please などの語において

アメリカ英語発音では /l/ が暗く、イギリス英語と比べて less devoicing…

とあります。

『Practical English Phonetics and Phonology』5版 P.51より引用

In stressed syllable-initial clusters GB /pl kl/, e.g. clean, please, the effect of aspiration on /l/ is manifested as devoicing with friction: [kl̥in pl̥i:z]…

In GA, /l is typically dark /l/ in such clusters and there is less devoicing than in GB.

これは4版→5版のアップデートなのでしょうか？🤔

上記のような環境ではアメリカ英語では無声化（devoicing）しづらい傾向もあることが見て取れますが、『Practical English Phonetics and Phonology』の4版や『American English Phonetics and Pronunciation Practice』の記述はどうなっているのでしょう？

無声化（devoicing）に関する記述は、4版にももちろんありますが、僕が探した限り5版で述べられている「アメリカ英語では無声化（devoicing）しづらい」というのははっきりとした記述が見つけられませんでした。

次に、Paul Carley and Inger M. Mees著『American English Phonetics and Pronunciation Practice』ですが、こちらも僕が探した限り、強勢のある語頭の /pl/ や /kl/ において、アメリカ英語で無声化（devoicing）しづらいことがあるといったはっきりとした記述は見つけられませんでした。
